Chewy’s June Surprises

Chewy's June Surprises

For the month of June, Chewy sent us Nulo Freestyle Grain-Free Jerky Dog Treats.   We chose to try the Turkey flavored ones.

I wanted to try these to see how Ginger did with them.  I don’t normally buy jerky treats because they are loaded with a lot of artificial ingredients.  With her being 12 and on a special diet, I try to be mindful of the treats that I give her.  There has also been a lot of tainted jerky treats sold that have been recalled and most of them have come from China.

With that being said, these were advertised to have some health benefits.  Below are what the company states,

  • Single-source protein formula with real turkey as the first ingredient and cranberries so they’re great for limited ingredient diets.
  • Soft and pliable texture so you can tear them easily and use them during training, or give whole for a grain-free anytime reward.
  • Packed with “good bacteria” probiotics in every bite to support a healthy immune and digestive system.
  • Your pal will love the real meat flavor that’s been slow-cooked in a natural smokehouse to preserve the doggy-approved taste.
  • Made in the USA with no added salt, sugar, or cane molasses, and zero corn, wheat, gluten, soy, artificial preservatives, colors or flavorings.

When the treats arrived they came in a 5 oz. bag.  The strips are about 4 inches in length.  The ingredients include turkey, Cranberries, Coconut Glycerin, Distilled Vinegar, Citric Acid, Dried Bacillus coagulans Fermentation Product, Mixed Tocopherols.

These had a smoky smell to them as jerky treats do, but I did not see smoke flavoring added to the ingredients.  I wasn’t sure what Dried Bacillus coagulans Fermentation Product so I googled it.  It’s an all-natural probiotic that includes live micro-flora enzymes and are beneficial bacteria that aid in the digestion process.

As far as taste, Ginger loved them.  They were moist and chewy and broke apart easily.  At times I may just want to give her half so this is a plus.  There is no added salt which is good because jerky treats seem to always have a high sodium content.

One thing I noticed about the package is that it stated in the back “No ingredients from China.”  This is the first I’ve seen this.  Although I always purchase treats that state, “Made in the USA” I recently came across an article from Dogs Naturally stating that this may not always be the case.  You can click here to read it.

Nulo Freestyle Jerky Treats (1)The Jerky treats seem to be really wholesome and I would purchase these to give to her as a special treat.  The next ones I will purchase however, will be the Grain-Free Duck Recipe with Plum.  I think Ginger would enjoy those as well.

If you are interested in purchasing these and trying them for your pup, you can get them here
