Chewy’s February Surprise!

For the month of February, Chewy sent us Vet’s Choice Health Extension Small Heart-Shaped Dog Treats.

The product claims to be made of free-range chicken which is their #1 ingredient. No rendered animal fats, glutens, added sugar, Ethoxyquin, or BHT, corn, wheat or soy. It is a gluten-free recipe and made without any artificial preservatives, flavors or fillers.

I was not sure what Ethoxyquin was so I decided to look it up. According to wiki, “Ethoxyquin is a quinoline-based antioxidant used as a food preservative in certain countries and a pesticide to control scald on pears after harvest. It is used as a preservative in some pet foods to prevent the rancidification of fats.”   After reading up on it, I am not sure why a company would decide to use this as a preservative especially when there are natural preservatives available to replace it.  But this is something that I will look out for. It’s always important to read labels and research questionable ingredients.

The treats came in a one pound bag which was a nice amount for the price. They are small which make them great for training and are heart-shaped making them so appropriate for Valentine’s Day.

I gave a treat to both Ginger and Lucy our special guest for the week and they both loved the taste. They are so small that I gave them extras. I would give these treats a definite A+ for flavor since both Ginger and Lucy loved them.

I always question why company’s state things like no animal fat or a particular meat being the first ingredient. Many of them will then list on the ingredient list fats, as well as, chicken meal etc.  This product does seem to have a lot of probiotics listed on the package which is good for the digestion. I would definitely purchase these, they are after all treats and like any other treat should be given in moderation.

I also love that they are heart-shaped so we will definitely be sharing them on Valentine’s Day with our canine neighbors! Below is the nutritional Information for the product.
