How to celebrate Cinco De Mayo with your Dog

Cinco de May has become a huge holiday here in the United States.  Although many believe that it’s Mexico’s independence day it actually isn’t. That’s is celebrated on September 16th.

The holiday was started to commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over the French forces of Napoleon III on May 5, 1862, at the Battle of Puebla.

For many Americans, Cinco de Mayo means enjoying Mexican food and a few margaritas.   As pet parents we always like to include our pet in every celebration imaginable so below are a few recipes that you can share with your dog.

The recipes below are courtesy of petcha.com but we have added our own spin to it.

Dog friendly tacitos

Ingredients:
1 sweet potato, cooked
1 potato, cooked
1/4 pound of ground beef or chicken breast
1 zucchini peel and 1 apple peel, Julienned

Instructions:
1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees and cook the potato and sweet potato as you normally would.

2.  While those are cooking you can go ahead and brown the ground beef or boil the chicken.  I used chicken in this recipe as I did not have any ground beef.  Once the chicken is cooked, let it cool.  Once cooled start shredding the chicken.  If you are using beef cook until completely brown and drain all the fat.

2.  Once both potatoes are cooked remove the skins and mash them together until you get a yellow color that somewhat resembles taco shells.  Once mashed start forming them into small taco shells, they don’t have to look perfect as you will be filling the center with the other ingredients.

3. Start cutting the zucchini peels and apple peels until you have long strips.  These will be the toping for the tacos.

3.  Once you have something that resembles a taco fill them up with whatever meat ingredient you decided to use.  Garnish the tacos with the julienned zucchini and apple peel.

4. These will stay fresh in the fridge for about 2 days.

This is what they look like when they are done

As you can see, Ginger loved them!
BARK-A-RITAS – Dog friendly (Virgin) Margarita

Ingredients and Supplies:
2 boxes of chicken or beef broth
1 zucchini

You Will Also Need:
-ice cube trays
-blender

Instructions:

Step #1
The night before, pour one box of either chicken or beef broth into ice-cube trays and freeze.  I used chicken broth for this recipe since it’s all I had.

On the day you plan on serving them, pour 1/2 cup of room temperature chicken broth into the blender. Add the chicken broth ice cubes. Blend until the consistency looks like a slushy.

Pour into a glass bowl and garnish with a zucchini slice.

Meh!

So I have to be honest.  Ginger didn’t care too much for the Bark-a-rita.   She took a sniff of it and walked away.  But hey, that doesn’t mean your pup may not like it.

The tacos however, were a hit!  We made extras for our neighbor Boomer who absolutely loved them as well!

If you decide to try these let me know if your dog loves them! Comment below!
