May 31st is National Macaroon Day

Macaroon Recipe for your Dog

May 31st is National Macaroon/Macaron Day. It’s the day in which we celebrate the creation of macaroons by devouring as many as we can. Macaroons, are not to be confused with macarons!

What is the difference?

According to Popsugar.com a macaron specifically refers to a meringue-based cookie made with almond flour, egg whites, and granulated and powdered sugar, then filled with buttercream, ganache or fruit curd.   In contrast, the word macaroon is a generic phrase that is applied to a number of small, sweet confections. Mostly, the term is equated with the moist and dense coconut macaroon, which is composed of egg whites, sugar, and dried coconut, often piped with a star-shaped tip, and sometimes dipped in chocolate.

So as you can see both are yummy! Of course the treats described above should not be given to your dog, but below are two dog friendly macaroon recipes that your pup can enjoy!

These yummy coconut macaroons take about thirty minutes to make but your pooches will love them!

Pineapple Coconut Dog Macaroon Recipe

Ingredients:

3 cups all-purpose flour
8 ounce can crushed pineapple
1 cup organic shredded coconut
1 tablespoon of molasses
1 organic egg

Directions:

Preheat oven to 325°F.

In a large bowl, combine pineapple, egg and molasses. Mix well.

Add coconut and flour, stirring until a sticky dough is formed.

Because this is such a sticky dough, spoon it out in tablespoon portions on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Space cookies 2 inches apart so they don’t stick together.

Bake in oven for 30-40 minutes.

Remove from oven and let cool for an hour.

Store in air tight bags or container and keep in fridge or freezer until needed.
