The Benefits of Children Growing Up With Pets

The Benefits of Children Growing Up With Pets, National Kids and Pets Day, kids and pets, children and pets,

April 26th is National Kids and Pets Day.  It’s a special day in which we recognize the benefits between the relationship of children and their pets.  If you ever grew up with a pet then you know how special that bond can be.  Dogs provide unconditional love and will never let a child down.  They will truly be a child’s forever friend.

This special day was created in 2005 by Colleen Paige. National Kids & Pets Day is dedicated to furthering the magical bond between children and animals, to help bring awareness to the plight of pets in shelters awaiting new homes and educating the public about safety between children and pets. “The future of our children and their ability to show compassion toward animals and each other, depends on us, to give them the skills necessary to make the world a better, kinder place to live, says Paige. So what are some of those benefits for children?  Firstly, owning a pet can teach a child responsibility.  Owning a pet means you have to learn how to care for it.  Children can do simple tasks like making sure their water bowl is always filled with fresh water, brushing the pet daily, these small tasks can help children become more nurturing as well.

Animals can teach children empathy and compassion.  Studies have shown that children who own pets have more empathy and nurturing abilities as they grow into adulthood, important skills that are needed to develop relationships.   They always say, “Want to raise an empathetic child? Get them a dog!”

Pets are known to lower stress levels as animals naturally provide relief and relaxation.  Petting a dog can be therapeutic for both the child and animal.  Petting often triggers the release of a hormone called oxytocin, which is a bonding hormone.  Another benefit is that the stress hormone called cortisol, has been known to be lowered by petting.

Pets also aid in exercise.  Have your child join you when you take your dog for a walk.  Going to the park with your dog is always fun as well.  Spending more time outdoors encourages a more active lifestyle for children.

Owning a pet can contribute to a child’s self-esteem and self-confidence. They provide many life lessons such as reproduction, illnesses, accidents, death, and bereavement.  These are all part of life and can provide life long lessons.

Pets provide companionship and promote a general feeling of well-being.  Nothing compares to the love, loyalty, and affection that pets offer.
