Today is National Puzzle Day

Today, January 29, 2018 is National Puzzle Day!

Like any other day many people like to exercise their brain with the use of puzzles. This can certainly be applied to our canine friends.

Although it’s very important for your dog to get its exercise, mental stipulation is just as important.  According to the AKC website it’s very important to stimulate your dog’s brain. Most dogs were bred for specific jobs, like hunting, retrieving, guarding the home, or carting heavy loads. Many dogs today are tasked with nothing more challenging than taking a walk, pointing at the treat jar, or taking the best space on the sofa. And bored dogs can sometimes become destructive dogs. Providing your dog with these puzzles will give them the stimulation that they need. It will also help improve their problem solving skills, as well as memory.

I like to use the puzzles during the winter months when I am unable to take the dogs out for too long due to the extreme cold here in the Northeast.  These puzzles are a great way to reduce boredom and anxiety.

The way many of these puzzles work is that you put treats inside of them and it’s up to the dog to figure out how to get the treat out. It can be very challenging but once they have figured it out they are rewarded with the treat.

There are so many puzzles on the market to choose from. Many of them are colorful and come in all types of sizes and degree of difficulty. You should always choose a puzzle that is sized appropriately for your dog.   You want to make it interesting and enjoyable for them.

Below are some pictures of the types of puzzles we use at home.
