Protect your dog from leptospirosis

As I watched the news yesterday a story came on about their being an outbreak of Leptospirosis in Northern New Jersey.  Dogs are becoming ill and some even dying after contracting the disease.  Veterinarians in the state say they have seen a spike in the number of dogs who have contracted the disease this year.

Leptospirosis can be passed between animals and people and is caused by bacteria. Infected animals such as rats and squirrels spread the bacteria through their urine.  This in turn can taint the soil and water. Veterinarians believe because of the mild winter owners have spent more time outside with their pets.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Leptospirosis is common in warmer climates and is contracted typically by those who work outdoors or with animals.

There is a vaccine for Leptospirosis but it does not provide 100% protection because there are many strains. Vaccinating your dog may or may not reduce the risk, this is something that you should discuss with your pet’s doctor.  One can prevent the spread by keeping an eye on their pets.  If you walk them or go to the dog park do not let them drink from puddles. Veterinarians here in New Jersey believe that’s how it’s being spread.

Symptoms of the disease can include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, lethargy, red eyes, chills, jaundice, and blood in the urine.  If you notice any of these symptoms TAKE YOUR pet to the doctor immediately, early detection is key.

Humans can also become infected through contact with the bodily fluids of the infected animal so one must be careful. If Leptospirosis is suspected antibiotic therapy will be started to help minimize organ damage and the risk of spreading the bacteria to other animals and humans. Treatment can typically take up to three weeks. Dogs with signs of liver and/or kidney failure may also need hospitalization and supportive treatment, such as IV fluids.   Many Veterinarians are pushing for the vaccine, what are your thoughts?
