Keep Pets Safe On Thanksgiving

This Thursday is Thanksgiving which happens to be one of my favorite Holidays. It reminds us to be thankful of our many blessings.   Thanksgiving is also a very busy time for Rover Sitters.  Below are some tips on how to keep your pet and your guest safe.

If you are expecting company, please remind them not to feed the dogs.  The last thing you want is for your pet or guest pup to get sick.  If you do decide to give them something, make sure you always have the owners permission.  Many of my clients are on special diets and can only eat what is provided for them.  I do give Ginger turkey without the skin.  Giving your dog turkey is safe, just make sure you give them white meat only and that there are no bones.  Another favorite of hers to eat is Sweet potato. I give it to her with the skin for some extra fiber.

If you are expecting a lot of company, you can keep the dogs in a separate area to ensure their safety.  This will also keep them from escaping especially when you have guests coming in and out of the house. Make sure the dogs have tags that are up-to-date with their contact information, and never leave them unattended when taking them outside for their potty break.

Also don’t give your dogs sweets. It’s not good for them and many store brought treats may contain Xylitol. I dedicated an entire blog post on this and the its dangers. You can view it here

There may also be other ingredients that should be avoided such as chocolate, nuts and raisins to name a few.

Lastly, guard the garbage can! Dogs are resourceful and when no one is looking they will raid it. You don’t want them to get their paws on something they shouldn’t eat.  One of those can include bones.   Cooked bones can splinter and cause damage to a dog’s throat and intestinal tract.  This could require surgery and can even be fatal.

I hope you find these tips helpful and we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours!

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the loss of our beloved darling, Ginger. She passed away July 16, 2020 at 14.5 years old. She battled CHF for as long as she could but her little body could take no more. Our hearts are shattered.
